Is Inertia Moving You In The Right Direction?

inertia

Over the past few weeks, it has occurred to me over and over again, that a feeling of tiredness or fear may be something entirely different.  Getting out of bed each morning is a very simple example.  Even with 7 or more hours of sleep it is difficult to rouse the body from the prone position.  “I’m so tired” or “Shouldn’t I sleep until I don’t feel tired” may be what we are inclined to think.  I challenge you to consider that you are not truly tired, you are simply experiencing inertia.

Inertia is Sir Isaac Newton’s first law of motion.  “A body at rest tends to stay at rest; a body in motion tends to stay in motion.”  That is the abbreviated version.  The full version states “An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.”

So a body in bed is a body at rest and until an unbalanced force, in this case more energy, causes the body to move there will be no motion.  Does that sound like the start of your morning?

Recognizing that our desire to stay at rest is simply a law of motion and not an indication of how rested or tired we are, we can dismiss that thought and move on with our day.

I love this analogy as it represents much of what we encounter on a daily basis as we go about running our businesses, taking care of family and simply having a life.  If the first thought we have upon waking is “I’m so tired”, how many other things are we miscategorizing and thus experiencing a less than desirable thought or feeling?

Fear, or an unwillingness to take action, may also simply be inertia.

Many of us “listen to our gut” in making decisions around change or taking action.  I am one of those.  Yet sometimes we need to push harder or query further if our gut says no.  It may be inertia at its best.

Fear can also have us running too fast, staying in motion, as it is easier than slowing down to see where we are headed.

Where are you… at rest and need a push?  Or are you running too fast toward that brick wall?  I can help.
