Rely on the Stamina of Executors to ‘Get it Done’

Who are the people that “get it done” on your team?  They are likely easy to identify by the long “to-do” lists that are completed.  Daily.  They turn the plans of the Strategic Thinkers into action and back up the promises of the Influencers.  Many of us mistakenly think we lead with Executing because we get things done.  Do you lead by Executing or are you simply a human doing?

The true Executors among us distinguish between busyness and priorities.  They are unafraid to jump in, get their hands dirty and get it done.  Their approach is seen as tireless and they bring a steadiness to their work.  They can take the complex and bring it down into steps.  When priorities shift, they quickly rearrange the work to accommodate.  Focused on the tasks and the outcomes they persist until it is done.

Unless combined with Strategic Thinking talents, it may be more difficult for someone leading with Executing to imagine the big picture and the final destination.  They will appreciate having the picture painted for them but will be more focused on what needs to happen NOW to move in that direction.

Combined with Influencing themes they not only sell what needs to happen, they actually make it happen.  Direct in their approach, what they say becomes reality.

Relationship Building talents soften the directness of the Executors approach, giving consideration to the impact of the project on clients and co-workers.  It also allows the Executors to identify just the right person to get it done.

A wonderful asset to the team, people who lead with the Executing Theme need appreciation for the work that gets done and the opportunity to develop other talents outside the Executing Theme.  The focus on “doing, doing, doing” can lead to over commitment, burnout, rigidity and hypercriticism.

Identify those with Executing Themes on your team, not simply by action (we all look like human doings at times) but through a cultivation of their natural talents. From that a powerful contributor can develop who leads the team in getting things done in a positive and productive way.  The CliftonStrengths® assessment, combined with an Accelus Team workshop is just the key to understanding the styles of the leaders and contributors on your team.
