Suiting Up and Showing Up

early days

Usache (my horse) and I began showing competitively in early 2008.  For the first few shows we (okay, me) were thrilled just to be there.  After our third outing came the wake-up call.  We had an okay showing but it was obvious there were some skills yet to be learned by me and some teambuilding for the two of us.  Usually the Sunday night after a show I am wiped out, but this time I could not sleep.

Around 1:30 a.m., I decided to put this restlessness to bed (literally) and got out my bedside notebook.  At the top of the page I wrote “A Purposeful Life” and underneath “focus and drive”.  On the right half* of the page I wrote “Adult Amateur Competitor”.  Yes that is a double underline and a Vision (see last week’s newsletter).  You see Usache and I had not performed up to our potential and I knew it.  Underneath that heading I listed the steps I needed to take to move us forward and for the steps I did not know I wrote “Ask Marie”, our trainer.

It was not enough to suit up and show up for the shows if we wanted to be competitors.  We had to do things differently, with focus and drive and seek out support because Amateur is an apt description of my status training a young horse.

If you want different results from your life you have to change what you are doing.  What got you where you are will not take you where you want to be.  You know some of the steps you need to take and for others you will need the support of a friend, mentor or coach to help you find the way.  Are you getting the results you want from your life?   barbara@acceluspartners.com
