Creating Opportunity

Do you think the outcome described in last week’s newsletter is fiction? Yes, I did make that one up. However, a few weeks back, I mentioned that I was going to track my “white space” and what came out of it. Here is a partial listing:

  • Organized a dinner party for a group of great friends
  • Thought of a way to have my extended family and immediate family together
  • Came up with another newsletter idea
  • Arrived early to a lunch meeting to have “white space” and instead had a delightful surprise visit with the manager of the restaurant
  • Seeded an idea for a presentation topic that was accepted for an upcoming event

Beside the lunch event, one other of these ideas has come to pass. On a recent Sunday afternoon, over 30 members of my immediate and extended family gathered in our home. These gatherings used to be rather common-place, occurring at least at Thanksgiving and Christmas. As the family has grown (another 40 or so members could have attended) and commitments to other families have developed, these gatherings have become less frequent. What a joy it was to have so many present!

It also represented one of the first of such gatherings hosted by us…the next generation. Most previous events were held at the homes of my aunts and uncles. While space was tight, we filled the main entertaining areas of our home and the children spilled out into the yard, everyone enjoyed the opportunity to be together once again. It is now up to us, the next generation, to maintain our family connection.

What grand ideas come to you when you take some intentional time away?  I would love to hear your stories.
