Creating A Vision

Creating a vision that you are able to communicate requires space and effort.  I find it
helpful to have a few tools to get the creative juices flowing.  These tools help coax that internal picture (vision) out of my head and
become something specific that I move toward every day (purpose).

Recently I enjoyed a pleasant reminder of how powerful a written vision can be and it came because of technology.  I purchased a Surface Pro 3 in mid-July.  My other laptop held on for 5 years and is still going but its slowness frustrated me and I felt confined to typewritten words when I wanted to draw and hand-write notes.  The Surface has delightfully freed me for more expression and more spontaneity.  I can capture ideas quickly that live on in electronic format, easily stored and found once again.

Found once again is what I discovered as I migrated “Notes” in my iPad to OneNote on the Surface (big fan of OneNote!)  In early 2013, I created space and invested time and energy into reading and completing the exercises in the book The Passion Test.  Suggested to me by my coach to help me vocalize my vision, it did exactly that.  What a delightful surprise to “rediscover” these gems and to see how true they are to me and my why.

It may take some effort to discover the tool(s) that work best for you.  Perhaps a book fits for you?  If not The Passion Test, then try Start with Why, or First Things First or Mastering the Rockefeller Habits.

It may be that you need to brainstorm, to throw thoughts, or ideas and words onto paper to see what shows up.  Partnering with a trusted friend or advisor might be useful at some point in the journey.  First I encourage you to work unfiltered and unedited, unashamed of what may come out of your head and mouth.  The surprise will be the fire it lights within you.

Let the power of your vision pull you forward and give you the courage to make it your reality.

Write your vision down.  Get it top-of-mind.  Then let the power of your vision pull you forward and give you the courage to make it your reality.

“Everyone has his own specific vocation or mission in life: everyone must carry out a concrete assignment that demands fulfillment.  Therein he cannot be replaced, nor can his life be repeated.  Thus everyone’s task is unique as his specific opportunity to implement it.”  – Viktor E. Frankl
